Start with the upper, not the stones

先看鞋面,不是先看钻

The single biggest component is the finished rhinestone shoe upper itself. This is the strap or vamp delivered as a decorated panel, not loose stones you glue on later. Underneath the sparkle sits a base: PU, satin, micro-fiber or mesh. That base decides how the strap bends, how it takes stitching, and whether it yellows. Pick the base first. The rhinestone pattern on top is the easy part to change; the carrier under it is not.

When you compare quotes, ask what base each upper uses before you compare price. Two uppers can carry the same rhinestone density and feel completely different in the hand because one sits on stiff PU and the other on a softer woven base. For an open sandal, where the strap is narrow and visible from both sides, the base choice also affects the back face the customer sees.

Most rhinestone sandals use Diamond Rope, a continuous rhinestone rope, to run along the edge of a strap or to outline a cut-out. It comes in two forms, and the difference matters on a sandal. Half-round rope shows stones on one face and sits flat against the strap, so it bends easily around a curved edge. Full-round rope wraps stones the whole way around a core, which reads richer but turns corners less willingly.

Inside a full-round rope is a core, usually a cotton cord or a PVC tube. The cotton core gives a softer, hand-sewn feel; the PVC tube holds a firmer line and resists crushing in the carton. On a sandal strap that flexes every step, tell the factory which core you want rather than leaving it open. A few things to settle before sampling:

  • Stone size along the rope, so it matches the upper rather than fighting it.
  • How the rope ends are finished where two pieces meet.

  • 全圆抽条的内芯:棉绳还是 PVC 管。
  • 抽条上的钻号,要和鞋面配,而不是打架。

A focal motif is what turns a plain rhinestone strap into a dress sandal. That is usually a Diamond Flower, a built-up rhinestone flower with real height, set at the toe or where two straps cross. Because it stands above the strap, weight and adhesion become the issue, not just looks. A tall rhinestone flower that pulls at one edge will lift before the shoe does. So the bond under the motif, and where it sits relative to the foot's flex point, both belong in the brief.

For bridal and evening work, the flower often carries higher-clarity glass crystal stones while the surrounding rope stays in a more economical rhinestone. Mixing two grades on one sandal is normal and keeps cost in check, as long as you say upfront which part gets which.

婚鞋和晚装的活,钻花常用透明度更高的玻璃水晶钻,周围的抽条用更经济的水钻。一双凉鞋上混两个等级很常见,也能压住成本,前提是你提前说清楚哪部分用哪种。

The quiet parts: backing, core and edge

不起眼的部分:背衬、内芯与包边

Two materials never show but decide whether the sandal survives a season. The first is PVC Strip, used here without stones as a backing or an edge band. It stiffens a floppy strap, hides a raw fabric edge, and gives the rope something firm to sit against. The second is the adhesive system. Whether the decoration is hot-fixed or glued, it has to bond to the specific base you chose at the start, not to a generic surface.

Crystal Mesh earns a mention here too. When a strap needs full, edge-to-edge coverage rather than a line of rope, the factory cuts crystal mesh, a flexible rhinestone sheet, to the strap shape and bonds it down. It is the right call for a wide cuff strap or an ankle band where you want unbroken sparkle. For a thin toe-post strap it is usually overkill, and rope reads cleaner.

The mistake that costs the most time is sourcing each material from a different conversation: the upper from one note, the rope from another, the flower as an afterthought. When they arrive separately, the stone colors drift, the AB coating reads warmer on one piece, and the strap that looked unified in the sketch looks assembled. Treat the whole sandal as one rhinestone package and brief it together.
