On a sandal, most rhinestone work sits flat against the strap. A 3D diamond flower is different: the petals are built up in tiers, so the center stands proud of the base and the outer petals lean outward. Light hits it from more angles, and the motif throws shadow as well as sparkle. That is what makes it read as jewelry rather than trim. The rhinestone stones are still the surface material; the structure underneath is what gives the flower its lift.

Placement decides everything. The three positions that sell are the toe band, the vamp center, and the ankle side. On a toe band the flower sits where the eye lands first, so it usually takes the largest motif. The vamp center wants a flower that follows the curve of the strap, not one that fights it. The ankle side is for a smaller accent flower, often a pair, left and right.

The flower can be larger and more open, because a bride's shoe is photographed up close.
