A clear brief lands round one close to right. A vague brief turns the same intent into three rounds of back-and-forth. The cost isn’t materials — it’s time. Two extra sample rounds usually mean two weeks lost before a buyer can confirm and place bulk.

02 · The Five Things

Five basics pin a motif brief down.

五项基础 · 先把 brief 钉死

  1. Size — finished motif dimensions in millimetres or centimetres, not “small / medium / large.”
  2. End use — where the motif lands (garment bodice / shoe vamp / bag panel / bridal headpiece). End use decides backing, stone weight, and edge logic.
  3. Backing — hot-melt, 513 double-sided sticker, sew-on, or a combination. If unknown, name the receiving material and let the supplier suggest.
  4. Stone feel — density (dense / standard / accent), preferred SS range, and whether multi-SS mixing is desired. A photo helps if a word doesn’t.
  5. The one non-negotiable detail — the thing in the motif that absolutely cannot drift. Maybe it’s the petal shape, the colour of a specific stone, the symmetry of an edge. Name it explicitly. Everything else is flexible.

  4. 钻感 — 密度(密 / 标准 / 点缀)、首选 SS 号数范围、是否需要混 SS。图片有时比文字管用。
  5. 那一个绝不能跑偏的细节 — 图案里那个"绝对不能变"的点。可能是某片花瓣的形状、某颗钻的颜色、某条边的对称。明确说出来 · 其他一切都可以灵活。

03 · References That Work · vs · Those That Don’t

A 20-image moodboard isn’t a brief.

References matter. Volume doesn’t. One line sketch with a single dimension on it tells a sampling team more than two pages of Pinterest pins ever will.

参考图重要 · 数量不重要。一张标了尺寸的线稿 · 打样间能读懂的信息 · 比两页 Pinterest 收藏多得多。

What works

  • A line-drawn sketch with dimensions
  • A photo of a similar finished product · with the parts you want different highlighted
  • A physical swatch of a sample stone from a previous order (if available)
  • A single reference image with one or two specific call-outs

What doesn’t

  • A 20+ image moodboard · dilutes the actual ask
  • “Inspired by Pinterest pin XYZ” · no specific extraction
  • Verbal description with no single visual anchor
  • A finished product photo without saying what should stay vs. change

04 · The Colour Question

Don’t leave colour implicit.

钻色不要默认

Colour is the silent assumption that sinks the most motif rounds. A photo reads as “crystal” on screen and ships as “smoky topaz.” The word “gold” covers a dozen actual plating tones. Specify colour in one of three ways:

  • A Swarovski colour name (industry standard reference)
  • A Pantone code (textile reference)
  • A physical sample of the colour shipped to LOCA

“Looks like the photo” is the answer that creates the most revisions.

05 · Production Specs

Anything below that’s already decided · put it in the first brief. Anything that isn’t · the supplier will come back and ask. Pre-answering these four pulls the first reply forward by half a day:

  • Quantity range — sampling and bulk may have different MOQs. A small motif at 200 pcs reads differently from one at 20,000 pcs.
  • Lead time pressure — regular or expedited. Expedited usually means smaller motifs and proven processes.
  • Application setup — will the motif be heat-pressed on the customer’s line, or pre-applied by the supplier before shipping?
  • Packaging preference — individual sachets, sheets of motifs, or bulk bag.

  • 数量区间 — 打样和量产的 MOQ 可能不同。同一图案 · 200 件和 20,000 件 · 工厂判断的方式不一样。
  • 时间压力 — 常规或加急。加急通常意味着小图案 + 成熟工艺。
  • 应用设置 — 客户产线现场热压 · 还是供应商发货前预贴。
  • 包装方式 — 独立袋装、板装、散装袋。

Why this matters

Eight ticks · Round 1 inside 7-10 working days.

A brief that clears all eight items typically gets a Round 1 sample inside 7-10 working days, and gets close enough that Round 2 is a tweak, not a redo. That’s the difference between a 3-week sampling cycle and a 6-week one.
